Ingredient label scanner: read the label with your camera
An ingredient label scanner uses your camera to read the printed ingredient list on a package and check every item against additive, allergen and insect-ingredient lists. Unlike barcode scanning it does not need the product to exist in a database, so it works on own-brand, regional and foreign products.
Why barcode scanning is not enough
Barcode apps look the product up in a database. When the product is in there, it is the fastest possible check. When it is not, you get nothing at all, and "not in there" is far more common than app marketing admits:
- Supermarket own-brands, especially outside the big five European markets
- Regional and imported products
- Newly reformulated products where the barcode is unchanged but the recipe is not
- Loose, bakery and deli items that have an ingredient list but no barcode
- Products with a barcode that will not focus because the packet is glossy or crumpled
Ingredient scanning solves all of these the same way you would: by reading the label.
How it works
The camera captures the printed ingredient text, on-device text recognition converts it to characters, and every recognised ingredient is matched against the additive, allergen and insect-ingredient lists. Matches come back as coloured pills. In the app's own screenshots you can see beeswax, e211, e338, e621 and e901 pulled off a single energy-drink can.
The result panel is headed Possible Match, and that wording is deliberate. Optical text recognition on a curved, creased, 5-point-type ingredient list is hard. The app tells you what it thinks it read rather than pretending to certainty it does not have.
Camera text recognition can miss text. A crease through a word, a fold in a foil pouch, or a glare band across a line can drop an ingredient entirely. For a life-threatening allergy, treat any scanner as a first pass that catches things you might miss. It is never a replacement for reading the label yourself, or for contacting the manufacturer when it matters.
Getting a clean read
Five things account for almost every bad scan:
- Fill the frame. The ingredient list should occupy most of the viewfinder. Text that is small on screen is small to the recogniser too.
- Flatten the packaging. Curved bottles and cans distort letterforms. Press pouches flat against a shelf edge.
- Kill the glare. Glossy laminate reflects overhead supermarket lighting straight into the lens. Tilt the pack 15–20 degrees rather than adding more light.
- Hold still. Motion blur destroys small type faster than dim light does. Brace your elbows.
- Scan one language block. Multilingual packs repeat the same list in six languages in one dense paragraph. Frame just the one you want.

The two are complementary, and the habit of falling back is the one to build rather than giving up. Barcode first for speed; camera second for coverage.
What the pills mean
Each pill is one matched ingredient, named as the app found it. e901 means beeswax was matched by its E-number; beeswax means it was matched by name. Seeing both on the same product is normal, because multilingual labels often print the name in one language and the code in another.
- Open FoodCheckr and tap ingredient scan in the tab bar.
- Hold the pack so the ingredient list fills the frame. Flatten curved packaging as best you can.
- Keep the phone steady. Sharp text matters more than good light.
- Matches appear as coloured pills naming each flagged ingredient and E-number.
- Tap Reset and rescan if the packet is creased and the read looks incomplete.

Almost always a capture problem rather than a matching problem: glare, a crease running through the word, motion blur, or type too small in the frame. Rescan closer, flatter and steadier.
