Barcode not found? Here is what to do next

A barcode fails for two different reasons: the camera cannot read the code, or the code reads but the product is not in the database. Fix the first by flattening the pack and killing glare. Fix the second by switching to ingredient scan and photographing the printed ingredient list instead.

First, work out which failure it is

They look similar and need opposite fixes.

The camera cannot read the code. Nothing happens. The scanner keeps hunting. No product appears and no "not found" message either.

The code reads but the product is unknown. You get an explicit not-found result, sometimes with the number itself displayed.

Knowing which one you are looking at saves you from repeatedly re-scanning a barcode that read perfectly the first time.

If the camera cannot read it

Five fixes, in order of how often they work:

  1. Flatten the packaging. Barcodes on crumpled foil, curved bottles and soft pouches distort the bar widths. Press it flat against a shelf edge.
  2. Kill the glare. Glossy laminate reflects overhead lighting straight into the lens, washing out the contrast the scanner needs. Tilt the pack 15–20 degrees rather than adding light.
  3. Change your distance. Too close is more common than too far. Move back to 10–15 cm so the whole code plus its quiet zone is in frame.
  4. Hold steady. Motion blur destroys barcode edges. Brace your elbows against your body.
  5. Check for damage. A torn, scuffed or over-stickered barcode may be physically unreadable. Look for a second barcode on the pack, since multipacks often carry two.

If the product is not in the database

This is the common one, and it is not a bug. Food product databases are crowd-sourced, and coverage reflects where contributors are. Predictable gaps:

  • Supermarket own-brands, especially outside the largest European markets
  • Regional and imported products
  • Newly launched or reformulated products
  • Small and artisan producers
  • Non-food items that share barcode ranges

The fix: scan the label instead

Switch to ingredient scan and photograph the printed ingredient list. This does not query a database. It reads the text off the packaging directly. It works on any product with a printed ingredient list, whether or not anyone has ever catalogued it.

This is the single most useful habit to build with a scanner app, and most people never learn it. They hit a not-found once, conclude the app does not work, and delete it. The fallback is where an app with both modes earns its place over one with only barcodes.

The habit

Barcode first, because it is faster and returns more: nutrition, origin, categories, supply chain. Ingredient scan second, whenever the barcode comes up empty. Two modes, one check.

When the record exists but looks thin

Sometimes the product is found but the ingredient list is missing or clearly shorter than what is on the pack. Crowd-sourced records are contributed in pieces, so someone may have added the name and photo without the ingredients.

Treat a suspiciously short ingredient list as a not-found and scan the label directly. An incomplete record is more dangerous than no record, because it looks like an answer.

Contributing back

Most food databases accept contributions. If you repeatedly hit the same missing product, adding it helps everyone who scans it afterwards, and it is how the coverage you rely on got built in the first place.

What no scanner can fix

  • Products with no ingredient list at all: loose bakery items, deli counters, restaurant food. Ask.
  • Processing aids: isinglass in beer, bone char in sugar, gelatin used to clarify juice. These never appear on the label, so nothing can read them. Certification is the only route.
  • Undeclared sources: whether E471 came from palm oil or beef tallow is not on the packet and not in any database. Ask the manufacturer.

Why is my product not in the food database?

Food databases are crowd-sourced, so coverage follows contributor activity. Own-brands, regional products, new launches and small producers are the usual gaps. Use ingredient scan to read the printed label directly instead.

Can I scan a product with no barcode?

Yes, provided it has a printed ingredient list. Ingredient scan mode reads the text with the camera and does not need a barcode or a database entry at all.
