What comes back from one scan

A barcode is a lookup key. Scan it and the whole product record arrives at once:

  • Verdict band: a plain-English line on whether anything insect-derived or flagged as harmful was found
  • Product identity: name, brand, image, and country of origin with a flag
  • Category tags: the product taxonomy, useful for finding comparable items

Barcodes explained, briefly

The stripes encode a number, and the number is the product.

  • EAN-13: 13 digits, the global standard outside North America
  • UPC-A: 12 digits, standard in the US and Canada
  • EAN-8: 8 digits, for small packs

The first digits indicate the numbering authority that issued the code, which is often, though not reliably, related to the country of the company that registered it. This is the source of a persistent myth: the barcode prefix does not tell you where a product was manufactured. It tells you where the company registered its code range. Country of origin is separate information, and FoodCheckr shows it separately for that reason.

Why a barcode scan sometimes fails

Three distinct failures, with three different fixes:

The camera cannot read the code. Glossy laminate, a curved surface, a crumpled wrapper, or poor light. Fix: flatten the pack, tilt it to kill the reflection, move 10–15 cm back, hold steady.

The code reads but the product is not in the database. The common one. Own-brand, regional and newly launched products are frequently absent. Fix: switch to ingredient scan and read the label directly.

The product is there but the data is thin. Databases are crowd-sourced, and a record may have a name and a photo but no ingredient list. Fix: the same one. Read the label with the camera.

The habit to build

Barcode first, because it is faster and returns more. Ingredient scan second, whenever the barcode comes up empty or the ingredient list on screen looks shorter than the one on the pack. Most people give up at the first failure; the fallback is where the app earns its place.

Comparing two products

This is where the barcode scan pays off beyond a single check. Every scan is saved and available offline. In practice this is more useful than it sounds, because grocery shopping is repetitive. You buy roughly the same forty products. Once each is scanned and cleared, the check is done, and history means you are not re-scanning the same jar of sauce every fortnight.

Food databases are crowd-sourced and coverage varies by region and brand. Supermarket own-brands, regional products and recent launches are the usual gaps. The fix is to switch to ingredient scan and photograph the printed ingredient list. That works whether or not the product has ever been catalogued.
