A halal food scanner checks a product’s ingredient list for items that are haram or mushbooh: gelatin (E441), carmine (E120), shellac (E904), animal-fat emulsifiers such as E471, and alcohol-based carriers. What a scanner can and cannot settle
Be clear about this up front, because it is the honest foundation for everything below.
A scanner cannot certify a product as halal. Certification depends on the source of each ingredient, the slaughter method behind animal derivatives, cross-contamination during production, and the ruling of the certifying body. None of that is printed on the packet.
A scanner is excellent at the step before that. It tells you which ingredients in this product require investigation, which is the part that takes time and knowledge. Going from a 40-item ingredient list to "three things here need checking: E471, the gelatin, and the flavouring carrier" is the entire job.
Think of it as triage, not a fatwa.
The ingredients that come up most
Gelatin (E441)
Derived from the collagen in cattle or pig hides and bones. Labels are rarely required to say which animal. Beef gelatin from a non-Islamic slaughter is still disputed by many scholars. Common in sweets, marshmallows, mousses, yoghurt, capsules and some fruit juices as a clarifying agent.
Carmine / cochineal (E120)
Red dye from crushed cochineal scale insects. Classified as haram by IFANCA, JAKIM, MUI and ESMA, and not permitted in halal-certified products by those bodies. There is a minority scholarly position that treats it differently, but the certifying authorities are consistent.
Shellac (E904)
Resin from the lac insect, used as a glaze on sweets, chocolate coatings and coated pills. Frequently labelled as confectioner's glaze, which is why it slips past.
Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids (E471)
The most common source-ambiguous additive in the whole system. It can be made from plant oil or from animal fat, including pork. The label is not required to distinguish. It appears in bread, ice cream, margarine, cakes and countless processed foods.
If you learn one E-number, learn this one. It is everywhere, its source is ambiguous, and no amount of label-reading will resolve it. You have to ask the manufacturer or rely on certification. A scanner's job is to make sure you never miss that it is present.
Alcohol as a carrier
Ethanol is widely used as a solvent for flavourings and extracts, notably vanilla. It usually appears only as "flavouring" or "natural flavouring". Scholarly opinion varies considerably on trace carrier alcohol that is not intoxicating in the finished product.
L-cysteine (E920)
A dough conditioner in bread and baked goods. Can be synthesised, derived from duck feathers, or historically from human hair. Source is essentially never declared.
Halal, haram, mushbooh
Most checking tools sort ingredients into three buckets, and understanding the third one is what makes the process workable:
- Halal: permitted
- Haram: forbidden
- Mushbooh: doubtful, because the source cannot be determined from the label
Most of the difficult ingredients above are mushbooh, not haram. They are not forbidden; they are unknown. The practical response to mushbooh is to check the source, which is the action a scanner should prompt.
