Alpha-gal food scanner: find mammalian ingredients on any label
Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose, a sugar found in most mammals, usually triggered by a tick bite. Managing it means avoiding beef, pork, lamb and their derivatives: gelatin, lard, tallow, suet, broth, magnesium stearate and often dairy. FoodCheckr added alpha-gal support in version 2.1.2.
What alpha-gal syndrome is
Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose, a sugar molecule present in the tissue of most non-primate mammals. In the United States it is most often triggered by a bite from the lone star tick; other tick species are implicated elsewhere in the world.
Two features make it unlike almost every other food allergy, and both make label reading harder:
The reaction is delayed. Symptoms typically appear two to six hours after eating, not within minutes. That delay makes it difficult to connect a reaction to the meal that caused it, and it means an accidental exposure at lunch can present in the middle of the afternoon.
The trigger is a sugar, not a protein. Standard allergen labelling law is built around proteins. Alpha-gal is a carbohydrate, so it is not one of the 14 EU declarable allergens or the US "big nine". It does not have to be highlighted on a label at all. Every other major allergy gets bold type; this one gets nothing.
That combination is why a scanner earns its place here than in almost any other dietary situation.
Where alpha-gal hides
The obvious ones are the easy part: beef, pork, lamb, venison, bison, goat, rabbit. The derivatives are the problem, and they are everywhere:

Alpha-gal exposure is not limited to what you eat. Gelatin-coated capsules, gelatin-containing vaccines, heparin, certain surgical materials and some cosmetics can all carry it. Tell every clinician you see that you have AGS. This is a medical matter, not a dietary preference, and it belongs on your records.
Why label reading is so exhausting with AGS
People with a peanut allergy get help from the law: allergens must be emphasised in the ingredient list. People with AGS get none of that. Every ingredient must be read in full, every time, and a large number of the risky ones are ambiguous by design.
The word "natural flavouring" can conceal meat extract. "Mono- and diglycerides" can be beef tallow. "Magnesium stearate" in a supplement can be either. None of it is bolded, and none of it is required to specify a source.
This is a matching-and-memory task performed under fatigue in a supermarket. It is the kind of task to hand to a scanner.

Sensitivity varies enormously
Some people with AGS react to trace gelatin. Others tolerate dairy without difficulty. Some find that reactions ease over years if further tick bites are avoided; others do not. There is no single alpha-gal diet, and lists published online are starting points rather than prescriptions.
